NAR, 14th May 2012, students of Ecole Notre Dame de la Providence Karubanda, Huye, Southern Province, expressed their unwavering commitment to be Rwanda’s next generation of peace-builders by tackling issues of human rights violation, inter-students conflicts through dialogue and discussion forums.

The commitment was made last Wednesday, 9th May 2012 during a meeting with Never Again Rwanda aimed at exchanging ideas on vision, activities and future prospects of partnership with the Huye based Peace-building Program of Never Again Rwanda.

The President of Karubanda Human Rights and Never Again Club, Anitha Umutoniwase said that the club will help students discuss about unity and reconciliation, Rwandan history, conflicts and collectively design strategies for building a better future.

“People killed their children and neighbors because they were wrongly considered inhuman and thought they have greater value than Tutsis,” she explained during the discussion.

“Our efforts to promote human rights are significant assurances that genocide will never happen again,” another student stressed.

Never Again Rwanda’s Representative and Coordinator of the Peace-building program Jean Baptiste Hategekimana hailed the club’s initiative and pledged support members and the school in general to further foster their participation in community actions aimed at preventing violent conflicts and human rights violations.

He emphasized: “no one is too young for peace, mobilize the entire school and larger community to embrace the principles of non-violence, liberty, equality and establish good relationships among yourselves”

Karubanda club’s Patron, Theoneste Ndungutse said that there were non-active Club of Human Rights in the school, but after attending Never Again Rwanda’s public speaking competition, “I got inspired by the organization’s vision”.

He further said, “I then discussed with Anitha who was the speaker in the competition and we decided to awaken the Human Rights Club and merged it with Never Again, forming Human Rights and Never Again Club”

Karubanda Human Rights and Never Again Club will among other key tasks help the school fight against the genocide ideology, promote the culture of peace, tolerance and other human values.

Questions asked by students centered on reconciliation, genocide ideology, healing, release of prisoners and their protection mechanisms.

Huye based Peace-building Program of Never Again Rwanda has been operating since June 2011 and Never Again Rwanda brought it here with a view to extend its peace projects to more schools and youth groups in Southern Province.

Through partnering with youth, Never Again Rwanda believes in a future where sustainable peace and development is driven by creative, involved, and critical-thinking youth.

To realize above, NAR undertakes to enhance youth’s capacity to analyze the root causes of conflict, and facilitate dialogue in order to generate ideas and activities that work towards peace and sustainable development.

It is hard to believe that Never Again Rwanda in 2010 is the same organisation that started some eight years ago. The development has been outstanding because of what has been achieved and how it has changed the face of the organisation. One of the challenges that we had was that we were activity oriented.

This report shows how we have evolved in the last year.

KIGALI – Never Again Rwanda (NAR), a youth-based human rights and peace-building organisation, in conjunction with Ingenzi Youth Association, yesterday, participated in the ‘Walk to Remember,’ to honour the, over a million, Tutsi killed during the 1994 Genocide.

The walk, which started from Kinamba, a Kigali surburb, ended at the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre, where they remembered the genocide victims by laying wreaths on mass graves.

The event was held under the theme “Let’s remember the youth who were killed in the 1994 Genocide because they would be the future of tomorrow if they were still alive”.

Speaking to the youth after the walk, Dr Joseph Nkurunziza, NAR’s Executive Director, said that as they remember what happened, they should also keep in mind that they are the future of tomorrow.

“We should continue remembering our beloved ones because they went when we still loved them,” he said.

Nkurunziza urged the youth to fight against genocide ideology and any other form of divisionism.

“We should fight anyone who promotes genocide ideology because it is evident that genocide leaves nothing but destruction in its wake,” he noted.

The Chairman of the Ingenzi Youth Association, Albert Santos Dukuzumuremye, called upon the youth to continue remembering genocide and preserving their dignity.

“As young people, we should fight against those who want to corrupt our minds with the genocide ideology,” he said.

One of the attendants, Grace Usanase, remarked that remembering the victims of the genocide educates young people about the causes and consequences of the genocide.

Never Again Rwanda aims to engage youth in decision-making processes at school and with government entities about human rights issues in order to foster a democratic and just society.

Human Rights Dialogue Project
– Throughout the year, Never Again Rwanda hosts radio shows, youth discussion forums, and theatre performances so youth can learn and critically think about human rights issues as well as generate and explore possible solutions. Human Rights Dialogues are funded by National Endowment for Democracy and Cordiad.

Debate Project
– Beginning in November 2010, Never Again will launch this new program to give youth the skills of active citizenship, promote their civic engagement, and foster political awareness. Through debating, youth will research, reason, and argue about the political and social issues most urgent to them, and learn the skills involved in presenting their case in public in a persuasive, reasoned manner. Beginning with a series of coaching sessions designed to enable secondary school NAR clubs to run debating societies for themselves, Never Again Rwanda will then run a series of regional and national debating competitions to encourage youth to critically engage with how their nation is governed.

Focus-Pressure-Action Project
– Going one-step further, youth use the Focus-Pressure-Action methodology to engage in decision-making processes regarding human rights policy issues. Youth first identify a pressing problem that can be addressed through policy change (FOCUS); they then develop and implement strategies to apply pressure to individuals with power to enact the policy change (PRESSURE), and, if necessary, they finally create a peaceful action to increase public awareness about the problem and desired policy change (ACTION). This methodology is used by the Youth Policy Working Group which focuses on national issues as well as by the Never Again Clubs & Associations for issues in school or at the local level. National Endowment for Democracy has funded FPA since 2007.
